We tend to think of God as being present in the extraordinary, the unusual, the dramatic — heavenly visions, miraculous healings, a dancing sun. When Elijah went looking for God he did not find him in the earthquake, the hurricane or the volcano. Instead God was present when “there was a tiny whispering sound.” We are being invited today to slow down and find God in the silence, the whispers, the normal, the everyday, the ordinary. When God asks Elijah “why are you here?” the prophet confesses that he feels like a failure, that the people still haven’t returned to God. God basically answers, you keep doing what you’re doing, keep bringing God to the people, and leave success or failure up to me.
