Back in the olden days when I was a music minister I introduced the song with the refrain: “You are the light of the world, let your light shine before all (actually in those days we said ‘men’) that they may see the good that you do and give glory to God.” The priest in the parish objected to this song. It seemed to him to put too much emphasis on human activity and not enough on God. I pointed out (calmly, serenely pointed out) that the words were not mine or even the composers. They were the words of Jesus. Our Lord wants us to understand that people are going to come to know the presence and action of God by what we do.
