The liturgical directives issued by the Vatican office for worship insists that a chalice be made of a “precious metal” — gold, silver or platinum. While there is a practical aspect to the requirement — precious metals are not porous and the sacramental wine will not interact with the material — there is also a desire to highlight the importance of the sacred vessels in their role in the liturgy. Isn’t it ironic that St. Paul declares: “We hold this treasure in earthen vessels.” For the Apostle, it is our fragility, our ordinariness, our commonality that highlights the significance of the faith we share. We are not the elite, the a-list, the chosen who are called to follow Jesus. Every one of us in our Plain Jane selves are fit vessels for the faith. During prayer today look for the presence of God in the “miracle of the ordinary,” in the providence of your everyday life.
