Jesus tells us to love our enemies. The conflict between King Ahab and the prophet Elijah provides an interesting perspective on the unexpected results of loving enemies. The king had acted in an unjust manner and the prophet confronted him. Ahab said to Elijah, “Have you found me out, my enemy?” Elijah proceeded to provide a ritual curse and a dire warning to the king because of his actions. His prophetic word prompted the king to repent. His enemy, the prophet, was, in fact, a blessing in his life. We don’t like it when someone criticizes, challenges, critiques us. We can look on them as enemies. But if we have the courage to face the critique and change, the enemy is a benefactor.
