My ordination class chose as our theme this line from St. Paul: “it is not ourselves we preach but Christ Jesus and ourselves as your servants.” One of the startling messages of Christianity is that God counts on us to proclaim in word and deed the love of God we have come to know in Jesus. Yet we are flawed, limited, sinners. Nonetheless, we are the ones God relies on to spread the message. Maybe people will forgive us for insisting on the need to turn to God even in our unworthiness if we act as servants. Reaching out and caring for those who are hurting and who are in need will cover a multitude of sins and keep us humble in our Christian vocation.
