The experience of Elijah provides a valuable lesson in prayer. He ended up in the cave on Mt. Horeb because of the great troubles he was enduring. He was striving to be faithful to God and still one difficulty after another overwhelmed him. Sound familiar? We must learn as Elijah did that we meet God best not in the midst of a earthquake of family troubles or a hurricane of financial woes or a volcano of grief. Rather, we must quiet ourselves down and find God in the “tiny, whispering sound” of daily life. Then instead of feeling sorry for ourselves we will find that God still has work for us to do to bring divine mercy, compassion, forgiveness into a world of woe.
