In the Sermon on the Mount Jesus tells us that he has not come to abolish the law and the prophets but to fulfill them. He then illustrates what it means to fulfill the law through six antithesis. “You have heard it said …. But I say to you.” These antithesis can be looked upon as a call to continuing conversion. There is a constant temptation to remain being “pretty good.” Was it C.S. Lewis who observed: God wants us to be saints and we are content with being decent? The fulfillment of the law (“be perfect”) in Jesus’ teaching happens when we treat others the way that God treats them — as worthy of love, care and concern whether friend or foe, good or bad.
