Back in the day I had a poster that read: When you find the perfect church, join it. Just be aware that the minute you join it, it ceases being the perfect church. St. Paul reminds us that we church members are not perfect but are “earthen vessels,” fragile, frail, faulty, finite. But maybe in the providence of God it is good that we are so. After all, when someone comes looking for a church and sees the likes of us they will recognize themselves. “Aha,” they might say, “This is a church where I belong since these people share all the limitations and inabilities that I possess.” A perfect reminder that God uses the likes of us to bring Good News into our world.
