Several years (decades!) ago I was helping at a retreat at Auburn University. One of the young men wrote a song as the theme of the retreat, “There are no strangers here, only friends I haven’t met yet.” It was a good song and a good retreat and by the end I think everyone was a friend. However, as Jesus reminds us in the gospel that is not universally true. Some do not wish us well, seek to harm us, want to exploit us — they are enemies. The commandment of Jesus is: “love your enemies.” How? When you really love someone you want them to become better. For example, loving parents discipline their children. We love our enemies by challenging them to become better people.
