Now is a very acceptable time; behold, now is the day of salvation. Annie Dillard once wrote that she was in search of some “present tense.” The all too human temptation is to miss the moment we are living through. We live in the past with the hurts and wounds and resentments that still haunt us. We live in the future when things will be better, my health will improve, my ship finally comes in. St. Paul wants us to understand that all we need to attend to is today. We might not like the times we live in, we might wish that the problems would go away, we might hope for something better but the call is to be faithful in the midst of what is given us. The Latin poet Horace provided the advice to live each day as if it would be your last. Don’t wait to forgive someone, to let someone know they are loved, to perform an act of kindness. Now is the day of salvation.
