Certain philosophies in both East and West have been skeptical about feelings. For example the Stoics felt that feelings were unreliable guides for human behavior. It was better to trust in reason. On the other hand, the Bible is a book full of passion. St. Paul insists the “the love of Christ impels us.” It takes passion to go on a missionary journey, to work diligently to overcome poverty, to strive strenuously to create a more just and peaceful world. The example of the saints demonstrate passion even as they trust in God, keep to their prayers, discern carefully, maintain serenity. The passions we have in our hearts are put there for a reason. Where is God urging you to put your time and efforts?
