My ordination class choose as our theme this thought from St. Paul: “In everything we commend ourselves as ministers of God … in the Holy Spirit, in unfeigned love, in truthful speech, in the power of God.” Looking back over the 43 years since then that sentiment has served as a guiding light. If I were to add anything to that youthful motto it would be the importance of “always rejoicing.” St. Paul knew how necessary joy was and Pope Francis has repeated the Pauline injunction. The Holy Father began his tenure by calling us to “the joy of the Gospel.” No more sour Christians, he exhorted. People will be attracted to the faith when they see in Christians a spirit of Joy no matter the circumstances.
