Since Jesus is the Son of God and Mary is the Mother of God we tend, rightly, to picture them as ideals toward which we should aspire. They are, as the saying goes, put on a pedastal. The Bible paints a different picture, a picture of people who go through all the things we go through as they strove to follow God’s will for them. The adolescent Jesus like all teen-agers is discovering the world and seeing how he fits in it. He does not notice how his own searching is impacting others — that’s what teens do. Since Jesus is like us in all things but sin we should not be surprised at this. Mary, like all mothers, has her heart broken when her son acts out. “Son, why have you done this to us?” The lesson for us: we are going to find our path to God in our humanness. The giving and taking of wounds is part of the human condition even with the best of people which is why forgiveness lies at the heart of the gospel message.
