We are accustomed in the Church to hearing the Ten Commandments. Certainly Jesus as a faithful Jew would have known and obeyed them. However, Our Lord had some commandments of his own that we, his followers, must heed as well. We should be aware of the challenge of the commandments of Jesus. For example, Jesus said “Do not worry about tomorrow.” To put it in commandment form: “Thou shalt not worry.” Quite a commandment in a world where we are threatened by the coronavirus, violence, economic disparity, environmental disaster. As the Sermon on the Mount makes clear obeying this commandment becomes possible when we trust that God looks on us as precious, knows what we need and gives lavishly to the beloved children of God.
