One of the ongoing illusions in human history is nostalgia for a golden age in the past when things were better than today. (Every age feels the same thing about some previous age which tells you how futile is this feeling.) The Supreme Court looks to the original intention of the founders since that must be better than our thoughts today. Politicians harken back to some time in the past when they imagine everything was better than today. (On Juneteenth we expose that lie.) Catholics think back to a time when the churches and schools were filled and sign with longing. Religious remember when the seminaries and convents were full and wonder what happened. The story of Elisha gives lie to those feelings. Certainly Elijah was a great prophet but Elisha is given “a double portion of your spirit.” We have a double portion of God’s spirit today because of all of the blessing bestowed upon previous generations. As the song goes, “These are the good old days.”
