St. Paul was not of the “you do your thing and I’ll do mine” school. The Apostle knew that what we believe matters and when he saw the corruption of belief he reacted. As the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning, your thoughts may be corrupted from a sincere and pure commitment to Christ. It is necessary to confess that Jesus was truly a human being since that shows the worth and dignity we have as human beings. It is necessary to confess that Jesus was truly the Son of God since that gives us access to the grace and power of God. Paul insisted on these foundational beliefs because he knew that right belief leads to right action. Because we confess Jesus’ humanity we must treat every person as a precious child of God just as part of the human family. Because we confess Jesus’ divinity we seek to follow the will of God in all things and not presume on our own will and power. “Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.”
