“Son, why have you done this to us? Your father and I have been looking for you with great anxiety.” I find these words that Mary addressed to Jesus consoling. If the Holy Family had difficulty in understanding each other, in communication, we who are not saints should not be surprised that we share in the difficulty. That might help to explain why forgiveness is at the heart of the message of Jesus. He weaves it into the Lord’s prayer and then to make sure we get it he appends: For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins (Mt 6:14).
