The Archdiocese is seeking to help pastors in their role so we all took a “Pastoral Leadership Inventory.” One of the issues it raised, though not worded this bluntly, was “Are you good at raising money?” From the very beginning of the Church, as the epistle of St. Paul testifies, getting support for the ministry is a necessity. The oblique way that St. Paul talks about his fund raising efforts suggests he probably was not comfortable with asking for money. For according to their means, I can testify, and beyond their means, spontaneously, they begged us insistently for the favor of taking part in the service to the holy ones. What the Bible wants us to understand is that giving is a way of offering thanks to God for blessings received. Praise God from whom all blessings flow, goes a famous hymn. And the way to offer that praise is by sharing blessings with those who are suffering.
