According to the dictionary a transactional person is someone who engages in relationships or interactions primarily based on what they can gain from them. Jesus warns us that our relationship with God cannot be transactional. God is always the giver. “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth.” We can’t create our own happiness by the stuff we have. Instead, God blesses us freely with what we need to live a full and happy life. However, Jesus goes on to say “store up treasures in heaven” which we are tempted to look at in transactional terms. If I keep the commandments, if I say my prayers, if I go to Church I will accumulate some heavenly treasure so God will repay me, tit for tat. But accumlating spiritual treasure to trade for a blessing from God is not what Jesus intends. Rather, our treasure in heaven is humility, obedience, fidelity, compassion which open us up to receive God’s gift.
