When we think of God we notice God’s creative or saving power. But the Bible teaches us that one of things God does best is forgive. God never gives up on the chosen people but again and again calls them back to fidelity. When Jesus taught us the Lord’s prayer he reminded us that God has shared the remarkable power to forgive to us. And to make sure that we get the point, at the end of the Our Father, St. Matthew appends a saying of Jesus that says, in effect, that we can blunt the power of God to forgive by our own unwillingness to extend forgiveness to others. Jesus hammers the message home because he knows how hard it is to forgive.
