For the next few weeks the daily Bible reading is taken from the stories of the patriarchs in the Book of Genesis. We start, of course, with Abram and Sarai — later, Abraham and Sarah. The story begins with Abram being told that in order to respond to what God wants of him he must leave things behind. The LORD said to Abram: “Go forth from the land of your kinsfolk and from your father’s house.” Conversion to a more godly life always requires letting go what was in order to become what we are called to be. We easily excuse ourselves — “that’s just the way I am.” God challenges us to let go of those things which inhibit us from becoming kind, loving, generous, forgiving.
