Then Jehoiada made a covenant between the LORD as one party and the king and the people as the other, by which they would be the LORD’s people. Covenant Renewal is a constant theme in the Hebrew Bible. God made a covenant with Noah, renewed it with Abraham, dramatically affirmed it at Mount Sinai with Moses, welcomed Joshua and the Exodus generation into the Promised Land with a convenant, confirmed David as king by a convenant renewal. Subsequent kings had to re-affirm the convenant, the special realtionship between God and the Chosen people, because of the constant temptation of worshipping the gods of their neighbors. Jehoiada’s renewal ceremony took place around 845BC after turmoil threatened the continuation of the Davidic line. Of course, the need to renew one’s relationship with God is not limited to the people of the Old Testament but includes all of us so we will, as Jesus said, “store up treasures in heaven,“
