God told Abram as he entered the promised land all the land that you see I will give to you. What God doesn’t mention to Abram in giving this promise is that at this time the Canaanites and the Perizzites were occupying the land. God was giving Abram the land that someone else occupied … which helps to explain why almost four thousand years later there is still conflict over whose land it is. This history is a vivid reminder to avoid the trap of thinking in terms of right and wrong, the good and the bad. Behind every conflict is a complicated story. Resolving conflict requires heeding the golden rule given by Jesus: Do to others whatever you would have them do to you.
