It was on that occasion that the LORD made a covenant with Abram. The word “covenant” is one of the most important in the Bible. It says that God has entered into an unbreakable relationship with Abram, and through him the Chosen People, and eventually the “new covenant” with the Church. Entering into covenant God has deliberately limited divine choice — the Jews are the Chosen People and “God’s call and election are irrevocable” according to St. Paul. (Romans 11:29). Maybe this is similar to making a “pinkie swear.” Growing up, when you wanted to give your most solemn assurance that you will never violate a trust we would link pinkie fingers and swear. God promises to never forsake or abandon us no matter what we do.
