You can picture what a Mel Gibson movie about St. Paul would look like: lashes, beatings, stoning, ship wreck, robbers, hunger and thirst, cold and exposure. However, such a movie would miss the point of Paul’s life. A Mel Gibson movie is about how tough, how stoic the hero can be in the face of great adversity. But Paul telling the story of his own life was not about toughness but about weakness. If I must boast, I will boast of the things that show my weakness. Paul was not showing how much suffering he could endure but about what God was capable of doing in him. His story was meant to illustrate that no matter what we are going through God is with us. As long as we keep our gaze fixed on what God wants of us, then nothing in this world we can’t deal with.
