John the Baptist is one of the pivotal figures in the history of salvation. Jesus himself said, “Of those born of women, there is no one greater than John.” How about that for a letter of reference! At his birth people said, “What, then, will this child be?” But really, can’t we say that about every child? Every mother and father looking at their newborn thinks the same thing in their hearts. Maybe that is John’s real significance. He reminds us of the divine potential that we are born with. He reminds us that every one possesses the “stem cells” of God which can grow and develop in so many possible directions. All anyone needs is the right guidance and nurture to lead to glory.
