The celebration of the birth of John the Baptist is an ancient one in the Church. Jesus and Mary’s births are the only others included in the liturgical calendar which testifies to the importance of John the Baptist. The lesson we can take from this day is found in the neighbors of Zachariah and Elizabeth who exclaimed, “What will this child be?” Can’t we say that about every child for each has infinite possibilities woven into its DNA! Every child has an eternal destiny so the obligation we bear as a society is to enable each individual to grow in wisdom, age and grace as God intends. Part of the seamless garment of respect for life includes giving each child the leg up they need.
