Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus became very popular because the liturgy and practice of the Church from the seventeenth century up to Vatican II did not sufficiently convey a sense of the personal love that God has for us. For one thing, the Mass was in Latin which only a few highly educated people understood. The spiritual hungers of people needed a referrent for their devotion. St. Paul wrote, The love of God has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us. The image of the Sacred Heart burning with love for the people proved to be an objective way of understanding God’s love. Accepting God’s love for us is foundational in the spiritual life.
