Ordinarily we remember a saint on the day of his or her death — the day they are born anew in the kingdom of God. The fact that we remember the birthday of John the Baptist shows his importance. The only other birthdays remembered liturgically are those of Jesus and Mary. John is in pretty lofty company there which tells us something of the important role that he played in the history of salvation. His birth caused wonder: “What, then, will this child be?” Actually we can say that about every child since every child has an infinite value and worth. It is one of the skewed priorities of our time that those who are charged with educating our children are not more highly esteemed (and compensated!) Experience has proven time and again that a child who is given an opportunity to shine will do so with the proper guidance and encouragement. Shouldn’t those who are promoting the next generation be a high priority?
