A common expression: How do you make God laugh? Tell God your plans. The Bible suggests that the reverse is also true: we find God’s plan laughable. Abraham found the plan of God that he and Sarah were to be parents in their old age laughable. Abraham prostrated himself and laughed. Indeed, this promised son was to be named “laughter,” Isaac. God’s plan is not funny “ha, ha” but funny in a way that produces an ironic chuckle. God’s plan is that we all live in unity. We chortle, as if that’s going to happen given the divisions in society. God’s plan is that every person live a healthy life. We snort, as if the haves will share with the have nots. But laughter triumphs!
