You can imagine that Mary experienced three days of profound anxiety and abject fear as she was searching for the teen-age Jesus. This was, no doubt, followed by immense relief on finding him and then, even though she had an immaculate heart, a flash of anger. “Son, why have you done this to us?” She probably thought something like, “I thought this would be easier since my child is the Son of God.” In fact, every boy and girl is a child of God but that does not prevent them from breaking their mother’s heart when they assert their independence against their mother’s wishes. That is why forgiveness must be part of every family system, since we tend to give and take wounds so readily.
