The siege of Jerusalem by the Assyrian army is an event we know through both Biblical and non-Biblical sources. Both agree about one thing — that Jerusalem was not captured. “Sennacherib, the king of Assyria, broke camp, and went back home to Nineveh.” Where they differ is why this was so. The author of the Book of Kings and the prophet Isaiah are adamant that it was because divine protection offered by Yahweh shielded the city. That was not how Sennacherib thought about it! All of which reminds us that believers can see things that others cannot. We can see God’s grace and mercy at work even in trying circumstances. Let us keep alert to how God is present and share that good news with others.
