For the next three weeks the assigned reading for the day is from the stories of the Patriarchs — Abraham, Isaac and Jacob — in the Book of Genesis. The saga begins with Abram (not yet re-named Abraham) and Sarai (soon to be Sarah) as immigrants. They leave their homeland in search of a better life. After wandering through present day Iraq, Turkey, Lebanon, Syria and Jordan they settle in the land of Canaan (Israel and Palestine.) Like immigrants always and everywhere Abram is insecure in his new home. He addressed God, “How am I to know that I shall possess it?” Then God enters into a covenant with Abram, a relationship where God and Abram both have responsibilities: God to protect Abram, Abram to honor God.
