We are accustomed to speaking of the Ten Commandments. One day I’d like to write a book about the commandments of Jesus: for example, Thou shalt not worry; Thou shalt not fear; Thou shalt not judge. When Jesus says, “Stop judging” he has a particular kind of behavior in mind. Of course, we have to judge whether something is good or bad, whether I should do this or that. The judgment Jesus condemns is presuming we know or understand the mind or motive of the behavior of another. Thus, saying to someone, “You’re a racist” would not be in accord with the command of Jesus. We can, and must, be able to name certain words, actions or attitudes as exhibiting racism but we leave in the hands of God to judge the heart of another.
