For the past few weeks the readings were from the Sermon on the Mount, Matthew 5-7. The Sermon consists in descriptions of the proper behavior of the followers of Jesus: the Beatitudes, “turn the other cheek,” prayer, fasting, almsgiving, forgiving one’s enemies, trust in God, stop judging. Jesus ends the sermon with this warning: “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the Kingdom of heaven.” In other words, simply being able to confess the faith does not suffice; one must live the faith. That is the “rock foundation” of the followers of Jesus. Pope Francis reminded us of this fact when he spoke of “martyrs for justice” — people like Dr. King and Monsignor Romero who were killed for how they lived the faith.
