Jeremiah had warned the people of Jerusalem, Don’t keep saying “the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord” as if saying it would keep them safe. They needed to live faithful to what the temple stood for in order to be safe. The prophetic word was that Jerusalem fell because of infidelity. Jesus warns the people of his time, “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the Kingdom of heaven.” Obedience to the will of God is the entrance ticket. The signs of our time warn us that simply repeating our creeds and catechisms does not make for a healthy Church. Living the Beatitudes, loving God whole-heartedly and our neighbor as ourselves, treating everyone — particularly those in need — as the face of Christ, forgiving seventy times seven times, inviting everyone into the banquet are the rock foundation on which the kingdom of God is built.
