Judea was eventually crushed. The Babylonians conquered the nation and took the people into exile. You can only imagine the crisis of faith this caused. God had promised Abraham a land. The land was taken from them. David had won for them a nation. The nation was destroyed. Solomon had built a temple where they could worship God. The temple was torn down. Who were the Chosen People once they lost land, nation and temple? Apparently when this happened to the northern kingdom of Israel they lost their identity. We never hear from the ten tribes again. But the Judeans, the Jews, went into exile and found they they weren’t people of the land but of the book. They found their identity in the Bible.
