Billy Graham is supposed to have said that given the state of moral decline in the country God was going to have to apologize to Sodom and Gomorrah. Maybe he was forgetting that God was open to forgoing punishment of the evil city: “For the sake of those ten, I will not destroy it.” Maybe there are ten good people in the city who are appeasing God’s wrath! When we look around and see all of the problems and difficulties it is easy to feel overwhelmed, helpless in the face of evil. The challenge is for us to be one of the “those ten” who live as God intends. Like leaven, as Jesus put it in another place, goodness will permeate the whole of society.
