Sarah laughed. And this was not a belly laugh full of amusement or a nervous giggle. No, this was a snicker, a sneer, which had an “as if” behind it. Sarah laughed at the promise of God. She was challenged: Is anything too marvelous for the LORD to do? That is the question that confronts us today. When we see how the world is full of conflict and division, when we see our country divided by race and class, when we see fewer and fewer people attending church we might laugh at the prospect of things getting better. But Sarah learned, the centurion in the Gospel learned, that God can make a way out of no way. Before Pope Francis died he named this a year of hope. Hope is not the same as expectation. We don’t know what God has in store for us. But we are people who are confident that the Lord who has brought us this far by faith is not about to leave us now. Sarah named the promised son, Isaac which translates “he will laugh” — this time a laughter of joy.
