When you visit Rome the figures of Saints Peter and Paul are everywhere. Although they did not bring Christianity to the City they are the foundational figures for the faith for Rome and, hence, for the entire Catholic world. They never ministered together; however, since the earliest days their Feast day has been celebrated together. This perhaps reflects an instinct on the part of believers that both the institutional and the charismatic dimensions of the Church are necessary. Peter stands for the institutional — keeping a sense of order and providing clarity about the nature of belief. Paul represents the charismatic — finding new ways and fresh approaches to sharing the faith with others. Both the institutional and the charismatic were necessary then; both are necessary now.
