Even the most casual visitor to Rome will notice how prominently Saints Peter and Paul are featured in the city. Buildings, mosaics, monuments, paintings, statues, etc. are dedicated to the two great apostles — recognized together as founders of the Church. The fact that they are considered together is something of a stretch from the word of Jesus: you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church. The fact that St. Paul is recognized as a founding father says something important about what it means to be Church. Peter is the one who brings the tradition, the memories, the structures, the institutions that create a culture. Paul brings creativity, dynamism, outreach, spirit into the Church. The Church needs both aspects of its life to thrive just as surely as we need two lungs to be healthy.
