If you want to make God laugh just describe your plans, goes the traditional saying. In the Bible it is not God but Abram and Sarai that laugh — not laughing “ha ha” but laughing “are you kidding me?” It is ridiculous to imagine that Abram at 99 and Sarai at 90 are going to have a child. So God tells Abram, soon to be Abraham, to name the son he will have Isaac, which translates as “laughter.” God’s plans for us can seem ridiculous at times. Love your enemies! Do good to those who hate you! The example of Abraham, however, is that God does intend for us to trust in these ridiculous commandments for, as according to another saying, the one who laughs last, laughs best.
