The most casual reading of the Bible convinces one that the life of faith is not about prosperity, success, “winning.” There is a whole book dedicated to Lamentation. Signs of God’s presence are not limited to hitting the lottery, getting a clean bill of health, family concord. God is also present in loss, sorrow, grief. We should be wary, therefore, of TV preachers who seem to suggest that following the gospel ensures a raise in income. “Your prophets had for you false and specious visions,” was not limited to Biblical times. Perhaps that is why St. Paul said to the Corinthians: “For while I was with you, I made up my mind to forget everything except Jesus Christ and especially his death on the cross.”
