King Agrippa and Bernice arrived in Caesarea on a visit to Festus. Festus referred Paul’s case to the king, saying, “There is a man here left in custody by Felix.” The names of these Roman officials are well known to historians. Festus was the procurator, a role that Pontius Pilate had held 30 years previously. The times were tumultuous. The Jewish revolt would break out a few years after these events. All of which serves to remind us that Paul had to live out his vocation in the midst of the harsh realities of social and political turmoil. We might wish that there was less strife in our society but the example of the Bible calls us to fidelity in the midst of today’s human drama.
