St. John ends the FInal Discourse at the Last Supper with what scholars call the High Priestly Prayer of Jesus. Jesus turns from instructing his disciples to praying for them, prayer for those who have accompanied him in his ministry and are gathered around the table. It is important to Jesus to offer this prayer since he knows that his followers will need support when he is no longer with them. “Now I will no longer be in the world, but they are in the world, while I am coming to you.” It’s not easy being on the battlefield! The lesson we take from this example is the awareness that there are times when the only thing we can do for another is pray for them. Even the savior of the world realized that he couldn’t prevent the troubles and difficulties of those he cared about. What he could do was accompany them with his prayer so they would know they were not alone as they sailed the rough seas of life.
