There is a saying that the role of parents is to provide their children with roots and wings. Roots — a set of values and practices that will help them to understand who they are and how they fit into the world. Wings — the freedom to be themselves, not to be constrained by the expectations of others but to be who God made them to be. In the scripture readings for today both Paul and Jesus are playing that parental role for their followers. Paul and Jesus remind those around them of all that they had been taught, of the gospel message that had been imparted to them. Hold onto that message and it will get you through troubled time they both insist. In addition, Paul and Jesus send the disciples forth to continue the mission which they had initiated.  In the prayer of Jesus he addressed his Heavenly Father: “As you sent me into the world, so I sent them into the world.” That is our challenge today as well. Let us hold onto the truths that we have received but find new and creative ways of bringing that truth into the world.
