The Angel Raphael gave some advice to Tobit and Tobiah before departing. Prayer and fasting are good, but better than either is almsgiving accompanied by righteousness. The gospel story for today coincidentally (providentially?) tells the story of the “widow’s mite.” A poor widow also came and put in two small coins worth a few cents. Both readings remind us to get over the idea that “this is mine.” The constant message of scripture is we are mere stewards — anything we have, we have as a gift. We experience this most poignantly when a loved one experiences dementia. We don’t even own our minds! When we give of ourselves we recognize how good God has been to us and show the connection we have with others.
