Tobit begins the book in his name by saying, I performed many charitable works for my kinsmen and my people. The rest of the book proves the adage that no good deed goes unpunished. The book is a series of woes that Tobit goes through. In the Gospel you can imagine that the owner of the vineyard thought he was doing a good deed in hiring people to work but he too has great difficulties. We would like to think that so much goodness earns so much reward but that is seldom the case. More often than not our good deeds are judged, criticized, condemned. All of which proves that we can’t do what we do in order to get another person’s approval. Our one desire and choice should be always and only to do what we think God wants us to do.
