Jesus prayed saying: “I pray not only for these, but also for those who will believe in me through their word.” At the last supper, on the night before he died, Jesus was thinking about us, about you and me. We are the ones who believe because someone shared the faith with us. What a consolation! However, the prayer of Jesus is still very much a work in progress: “that they may all be one, as you, Father, are in me and I in you, that they also may be in us,” The unity Jesus prayed for has proven elusive. Heresies, sects, heterodoxy, denominations, “separated brethren” — however you name it throughout history Christians have not been one. That is not even to mention the God-fearing people who aren’t Christian. Jesus probably prayed that prayer because he knew how difficult creating unity would be. While we as individuals can’t do all that much to heal the division between the Churches we can find a way to overcome whatever separates us from that family member or friend we are estranged from.
