Paul’s second letter to Timothy is supposedly written from Rome as a last will and testament to a beloved younger colleague in ministry. The apostle suggests that success in ministry depends on two things. First, Paul says he worships “with a clear conscience as my ancestors did.” In other words, it is important to stay grounded in those traditions we have inherited for they provide proper guidance and direction. Paul adds a second admonition: “Stir into flame the gift of God that you have through the imposition of my hands.” It is not sufficient to simply repeat what the ancestors did. One must stir it up, make it fresh, renew the traditions for the current situation. Both instructions are necessary for a successful ministry.
